RadioShack closings sad for hobbyists

News that RadioShack plans to close up to 1,100 stores will make it a little harder for hobbyists to make a quick dash to the neighborhood shack for some important part or gadget to finish a project. Blame fickle and constantly changing consumer electronics needs and competition from big-box stores.

RadioShack stores have always been a dependable place for people who enjoy dabbling in electronics.

But news that RadioShack plans to close up to 1,100 stores will make it a little harder for hobbyists to make a quick dash to the neighborhood shack for some important part or gadget to finish a project. The news of the closings follows a reported $191.4 million quarterly loss and a disappointing holiday season.

The fickle and constantly changing consumer electronics needs create a massive problem for the more than 90-year-old, Fort Worth, Texas-based retailer. Competition from big-box stores is another concern.

RadioShack will be left with more than 4,000 U.S. stores. No news has surfaced yet on which stores are targeted for closing.
