The Copenhagen Zoo created a huge offense in killing a giraffe and feeding its body to the lions because its genes were already prevalent among giraffes in European zoos.
The New Zealand Herald reports that the Copenhagen Zoo ignored petitions signed by thousands of people and offers from other zoos and private individuals to take the 2-year-old giraffe named Marius. Those were pushed aside and the animal slaughtered as visitors watched and then the corpse was fed to lions.
The slaying is offensive to people everywhere who support zoos as places worldwide for the preservation of animals for people to enjoy — especially species that are endangered in the wild.
