Trust in Karzai fades with his outreach to Taliban

President Barack Obama should know by now to expect consistency from Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Everything Obama wants Karzai to do will just about always go in the opposite direction. That backward motion is behind Karzai refusing to sign a long-term security agreement with the United States and NATO, enabling troops to stay beyond this year’s pullout of combat forces.

It also is behind Karzai having secret contacts with the Taliban, which may include a peace agreement without the U.S. and Western allies. The fading trust should push Obama and NATO forces to completely pull out of Afghanistan sooner than the set exit date.

Nothing good will come from staying longer. The nearly 13-year-old war has been the longest in U.S. history.

It needs to end now.
