Forty million Target customers’ credit, debit card information stolen

Just as certain as shoppers will see Christmas decorations before Halloween, they can also count on scams hitting during the holiday season.

Target unfortunately has become, well, the biggest target this year. The retailer said Thursday that it is investigating a security breach involving stolen credit and debit card information for 40 million shoppers.

The company said in a statement that criminals gained access to customer information starting Nov. 27 and continued that link through Dec. 15. “Target is working closely with law enforcement and financial institutions, and has identified and resolved the issue,” the statement says.

“Target’s first priority is preserving the trust of our guests, and we have moved swiftly to address this issue, so guests can shop with confidence,” said Gregg Steinhafel, Target’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

“We take this matter very seriously and are working with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.”

Target store customers who have used credit or debit cards for purchases are advised to review their bank statements closely for unauthorized expenses and then to report any findings immediately.
