Schools can overreact when punishing children for what could be puppy love.
That occurred in Canon City, Colo., where a 6-year-old boy was suspended for kissing a girl. School officials accused the boy of sexual harassment.
First-grader Hunter Yelton told KRDO-TV that he has a crush on a girl classmate, and she likes him.
“It was during class, yeah. We were doing reading group, and I leaned over and kissed her on the hand. That’s what happened,” he told the station.
District Superintendent Robin Gooldy told The Associated Press that the boy was suspended because of a policy against unwanted touching.
The mother, Jennifer Saunders, said her son was suspended once before for kissing the girl, but the girl did not complain about being kissed.
School officials shouldn’t get uptight about the classroom show of affection, either.
