The first snowfall in Kansas City always catches motorists by surprise, and the inch or so of snow that landed on area roads Thursday morning was no exception.
Commuters who hit the streets early found that no city snow removal crews had gone before them to clear the streets. The early motorists then packed down the snow so that when the morning rush hour hit in Kansas City the streets in many places were coated with ice.
Cars and trucks became stuck on hilly streets, and vehicle wrecks occurred along with many spin-outs and near misses. Kansas City street crews will have to do a better job clearing the roads when the next snowfall hits, which is expected Sunday along with frightfully low temperatures.
Kansas City snowplow crews should watch and learn from the work of Missouri highway snow removal workers. The interstates early Thursday were clear going to Kansas City International Airport as well as the highways into downtown.
The highway entry and off ramps, not so much.
