The latest issue of Midwest Traveler magazine won’t likely get high praise from folks in Kansas City.
That’s because the AAA publication picked St. Louis as the best large city for a weekend get away. Readers by 21 votes named the city with the Gateway Arch as the best in the Midwest.
Kansas City came in second with Chicago pulling up a lame third. The magazine said St. Louis visitors could enjoy many attractions and activities that are either “free or have reasonable fees.” The city’s attractions include Forest Park, the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art Museum, the riverfront Fourth of July display, summer concerts at Soldiers Memorial downtown and Art Hill Plaza.. The St. Louis area also was picked for the Best Casino — the Ameristar Casino Resort in St. Charles.
The magazine selected Independence for the Best Day Tour with its Harry Truman attractions and the Midwest Genealogy Center. Kansas City rated the Best City for Live Music because of its performances in the Power & Light District and the 18th and Vine area.
Our town also was chosen for the Best Attraction. That’s still the Country Club Plaza with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art nearby.
Of course Kansas City was picked for the Best Food Festival because of its second to none barbecue.
