The investigation will continue for weeks into the crash Saturday of the South Korean jetliner at San Francisco International Airport.
But the miracle in the Asiana Airlines Flight 214, originating in Shanghai, China, with a stop in Seoul, South Korea, was that so many people survived the crash. Of the 291 passengers and 16 crew members on the plane, 182 people were taken to hospitals.
As of Sunday afternoon, 19 people remained hospitalized with six in critical condition, one being a child. Two Chinese teenagers were killed in the crash of the Boeing 777, where passengers reported oxygen masks dropping after the landing went bad.
The few injuries and loss of life are because of safety features built into modern passenger aircraft. They enable passengers to survive a crash landing and then escape the plane before it catches fire.
