Salads likely to stay a hard sell at McDonald’s

McDonald’s is struggling to get more customers to buy salads. But ask yourself: When was the last time you went to a McDonald’s, known for its fast and filling hamburgers, tasty and addictive french fries and calorie laden drinks just so you could order a salad?

You’ve got to love McDonald’s. The fast-food restaurant keeps trying to make itself appear to offer more healthy menu items.

It got rid of the massive Angus Third Pounder burger. Those were good hamburgers.

Now McDonald’s is struggling to get more customers to buy salads. But ask yourself: When was the last time you went to a McDonald’s, known for its fast and filling hamburgers, tasty and addictive french fries and calorie laden drinks just so you could order a salad?

It’s like going into a gun store and asking for lipstick. Ain’t gonna happen.

Bloomberg News reports that salads constitute 2 percent to 3 percent McDonald’s sales in the United States, compared with the Dollar Menu accounting for 13 percent to 14 percent of sales. People go to McDonald’s because it is well-known and well-loved for its burgers, fries and drinks.

McDonald’s added salads to its U.S. menus 26 years ago. Those items haven’t come of age yet.
