Morning rush hour traffic on eastbound Interstate 70 exiting at the Paseo was backed up a bit more than normal.

It could have been partly because metal hungry thieves stole 11 pedestrian-crossing signal poles on the Paseo at the ramps from I-70. Only one pole remained after the theft was noticed on Tuesday, The Kansas City Star reports.

The aluminum will likely be chewed up so that it’s not obvious what it came from and sold for scrap value. But the theft puts pedestrians and others at risk.

It will cost $30,000 to replace the poles that the thieves will likely get only a few bucks for. What a waste.
