Platte Co. R-3 High
Student leaders: Seven DECA students attended the fall leadership conference this month at the Lake of the Ozarks.
The students attended leadership workshops and participated in competitive events during the two-day conference. The students were seniors Megan Caswell, Noelle Foster, Nyah Frazier and Robert Quinn; and juniors Valencia Bowie, Jessica Langner and Tanner Minyard.
DECA is an association for students interested in marketing, management and entrepreneurship.
MO. Western State
Scholarship recipients: Northland students were awarded scholarships by the university’s nursing department for the 2009-2010 academic year.
From Dearborn, Katie Anderson, a senior majoring in nursing, received the Missouri Methodist Nursing Scholarship; from Holt, Rachel Simmons, a sophomore majoring in nursing, the Robaska Family Scholarship in memory of Catherine McAvoy Leddy; from Kansas City, North, Katherine King, a senior majoring in medical technology, the Theodore C. Kiekhaefer, M.D., Health Care Career Nursing Scholarship; from Kearney, Lindsay Wiese, a senior majoring in nursing, the Jody S. Bauman Nursing Scholarship; and from Smithville, Joy Wilson, a senior majoring in nursing, a Western Foundation and Heartland Nursing Scholarship.
Plaza Middle School
Administrator honored: Lezlee Ivy, assistant principal, received the Exemplary Principal Award from the Greater Kansas City Missouri Principals Association.
Ivy was chosen by her peers and was recognized at the Missouri Association for Secondary School Principals conference this month.
University of Kansas
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences: Two Liberty students were among some 70 students honored with scholarships and awards for fall semester.
Jacquelyn Murdock, a junior majoring in environmental studies, was chosen for a C.E. Spahr Scholarship in the Sciences.
Gregory Weseloh, a senior majoring in cognitive psychology, received the Betty Wahlstedt Student Memorial Award.
Career Center
College fair: More than 30 colleges will be represented at an informational fair from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 4.
The fair will be at the Northland Career Center, 1801 Branch St. in Platte City. Prospective students and parents are encouraged to attend. For more information, call 816-858-5505.
Liberty High School
Stellar orators: Speech and debate team members earned honors at recent tournaments.
At the Kickapoo/Glendale tournament, the team placed third in the novice division sweepstakes. Twenty-one schools competed.
Achieving individual recognition were Carolyn Pjecha, first in novice oratory, and Monica Gerhig, second in novice foreign extemporaneous. Placing third were Max Accardi/Carolyn Pjecha and Helen Alpern/Lizzy Soper in novice policy debate; Alexis Elliott/Matt Orr, champ public forum debate; Madison Wixon in regular Lincoln Douglas debate; and Kristen Wright/Caitlyn Potter in policy debate.
At the Oak Park High School tournament, Paul Tasetano placed first in storytelling. Second-place winners were Julie Staszko in novice oratory; Mack Yi in novice extemporaneous; and Mack Yi/Thomas Jones in novice policy debate. Emily Fuller placed third in novice storytelling.
