Road, stormwater projects get county funds

More News

The Johnson County Commission recently approved $33.6 million in road improvements and storm water projects for next year.

The County Assistance Road System, or CARS includes 21 projects in 13 cities at a cost of $22.3 million. Of that amount, $6.6 million had been previously allocated to projects that had been cancelled because of the economy. The money was reallocated last week by commissioners for next year.

For the projects to go forward, the cities must match the county’s contributions.

Four new projects in Overland Park will receive more than $7.4 million in funding. They include:

•Improvements on 127th Street from Metcalf Avenue to Nall Avenue.

•Antioch Road from Interstate 435 to 119th Street.

•College Boulevard from U.S. 69 to Benson Drive.

•103rd Street from U.S. 69 to Quivira Road.

Improvements are also planned for Mission Road from 95th to 103rd streets in Overland Park and Leawood.

Two road projects in Leawood also will receive CARS funding. The program has allotted $247,000 to improve 135th Street from State Line Road to Nall Avenue and $125,000 for work on State Line Road from I-435 to 119th Street. The project is being coordinated with Kansas City.

The program earmarked $5.5 million for the continuing improvement of Lone Elm Road and the I-35 interchange at 159th Street in Olathe. The project has received more than $5.3 million from the CARS program over the last three years.

Other projects include:

•53rd Street from Buena Vista to Reinhart streets and for Buena Vista from Shawnee Mission Parkway to 83rd Street in Fairway and Roeland Park.

•95th Street from Lackman Road to Santa Fe Trail Drive, Lenexa.

•Ridgeview Road from 119th to Santa Fe (135th) streets, Olathe.

•83rd Street from Nall Avenue to Roe Avenue, Prairie Village.

•Johnson Drive and Robert Street roundabout, Shawnee.

The storm water management program will allocate $11.3 million to projects in Shawnee, Spring Hill, Lenexa and Olathe.

Three projects are in Shawnee:

•Storm drainage improvements in the area of 70th and Flint streets to south of Yager Street.

•A project at 50th Street and Neiman Road.

•Improve drainage in the area west of 57th and Cody streets to 55th and Monrovia streets.

Two projects are in Olathe:

•A drainage project near South Brougham Drive and West 147th Terrace.

•Stormwater improvements near 151st Street and South Quivira Road.

Lenexa will receive $435,904 for stormwater improvements at 108th Street and Pflumm Road.

The program also would improve drainage at Nichols and Race streets in Spring Hill.

The county’s annual storm water program is funded by a 1/10-cent sales tax.
