Centerpoint to sponsor Independence Events Center community ice rink

More News

The community ice facility at the new Independence Events Center will be sponsored by Centerpoint Medical Center.

The community ice rink that is adjacent to the new events center will bear the medical center’s name and logo. The Independence City Council unanimously approved the plan Monday night.

The medical center has agreed to a 10-year deal. Centerpoint will pay annual fees of more than $100,000. The deal will start with $106,400 for this current year and will top out at about $151,440 in 2018.

The agreement also spells out that physicians designated by Centerpoint will be on hand at games involving the Missouri Mavericks, the minor league hockey team that will be the events center’s anchor tenant.

The medical center opened in 2007 just across Interstate 70 from the new events center.

Independence, the owner of the new building, officially took control of the events center on Monday. Robert Heacock, Independence city manager, thanked JE Dunn and other firms that played roles in the building’s construction and for delivering it “on time and on budget.”

An announcement about the corporate sponsorship of the events center itself could be made in a few weeks, Heacock said.

An open house begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the new facility, just southeast of Interstate 70 and Missouri 291.

In other business, the City Council tabled an ordinance that could have established a community improvement district for the Noland Fashion Square shopping center in southwestern Independence.

The center’s owners had asked that a community improvement district be established. The deal proposed a sales tax to fund site improvements, including parking lot repairs and other upgrades.

However, the center since has gone into receivership, city counselor Allen Garner told the council Monday night.

“Very recently legal action was filed over the debt structure involved in that piece of property,” Garner said. “As a result of that filing, a receiver was appointed.” Any action by Independence, Garner said, should be postponed until the parties “sort everything out.”

Independence staff members had recommended that the CID proposal be denied, maintaining there could be no assurances of significant results for the public-private investment.

Noland Fashion Square is at the northwest corner of U.S. 40 and Noland Road.
