See you later, gator

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. | Officials believe they have found an alligator that escaped from a wildlife officer who brought the animal to his daughter’s school for show and tell.

Stan Kirkland, a spokesman for the Florida wildlife commission, said officials think the 5-foot alligator is in a Panhandle pond.

Searchers scoured a wooded area surrounding the school Friday afternoon after the alligator jumped out of the man’s vehicle with its mouth taped shut.

Kirkland said alligators have “amazing” jumping ability, which allowed it to escape.

See you later, part two

COLUMBUS, Ohio | Residents of Ohio’s capital city say police officers are telling them to move out if they’re fed up with neighborhood crime.

At least two Columbus City Council members have heard the complaint. An aide to Councilwoman Charleta Tavares said she had received more than 20 calls. Councilman Andrew Ginther said the police comments are neither acceptable nor appropriate, though he believes most officers want to be helpful.

A police spokesman said the department addresses the complaints when it is given the name of an officer.

A police union official said he understands if officers are frustrated with crime. Said the president of the Fraternal Order of Police, Jim Gilbert: “It’s like the OK Corral out there.”

Payback of Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. | A woman mistakenly tipped $29,000 by the University of Notre Dame in her catering paycheck will return more than half of the money in $50 monthly payments over the next 28 years.

Notre Dame sued Sara Gaspar of Granger, Ind., to return the money because she should have been paid only $29.87.

Under a settlement, Gaspar agreed to pay back nearly $17,000 in the monthly increments.

She put up as collateral a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta she bought with the money. Gaspar also agreed to pay Notre Dame’s attorney fees.

Gaspar has said she tried three times to tell Notre Dame about the overpayment but university staffers didn’t return her calls.

Ferret or foul

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. | It’s one thing for shoplifters to hide plunder in their pants. But a live ferret?

Police say a homeless man in north Florida did just that and made it out the door.

Rodney Bolton, 38, is charged with theft of the $129 animal that police say he took from a pet store.

A 17-year-old confronted Bolton in the parking lot and was bitten by the animal after the man allegedly shoved it in the teen’s face.

That confrontation makes the ferret a “special weapon” under Florida law. So Bolton also faces battery charges.
