LAWRENCE | Journalism professor dies
The University of Kansas is mourning the death of journalism professor Christy Bradford, who suffered a heart attack Thursday and died at a Kansas City hospital.
Bradford, who had more than 35 years in the newspaper industry, was a former managing editor at The Detroit News, where in 1994 she helped win a Pulitzer Prize. She joined the KU faculty in 1999, teaching reporting, editing and multimedia. She also mentored the journalism school’s multicultural scholars.
“Christy’s news expertise was a great benefit to the journalism school and its students, and she will be missed,” Chancellor Robert Hemenway said in a statement on the university’s Web site.

KANSAS CITY | Green summit today
Kansas City has scheduled a Green Summit from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the Bartle Hall grand ballroom, 301 W. 13th St.
Professionals will discuss best practices for green solutions and building green infrastructures. Exhibits will be presented by local companies that have integrated green solutions.
Majora Carter, executive director of Sustainable South Bronx, will be the keynote speaker. Sustainable South Bronx is a nonprofit organization that empowers communities to clean up their urban cores and create green-collar jobs.
Registration is $50 per person; admission is free to city employees and nonprofit participants. Pre-registration must be made online at www.rainkc.com.
GLADSTONE | Annual spring cleanup
Gladstone will hold its annual spring cleanup for residents from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Sunday at Happy Rock Park, Northeast 76th Street and North Antioch.
Residential trash and debris will be accepted at no charge to city residents. Appliances and tires will be accepted for a fee. On Saturday only, from 8 a.m. to noon, a bonded shredding company will be on site for document disposal.
Proof of residency is required. Liquids, hazardous waste, and brush and yard waste will not be accepted.
NORTHLAND | Band concert
The North Star Community Band has scheduled its 20th annual spring concert at 7:30 tonight in the auditorium at Oak Park High School, 825 N.E. 79th Terrace.
The free concert will feature the music of George Gershwin and Cole Porter. Children are invited.

If the sky is clear today, Pillsbury Observatory at William Jewell College will hold an open house from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. to view Saturn.
The viewing is free, with no formal program. To reach the observatory, take the White Science Center elevator to the fourth floor and climb 50 steps to the dome.

Catholic Charities will show off its new offices during an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Visitors can find out more about the agency’s mission and shop at its thrift store, Turnstyles, which usually isn’t open on Sunday. The office is at 9750 W. 87th St.
