    Public safety: Man commits suicide during traffic stop

    CLAY COUNTY | A man shot and killed himself shortly after being pulled over by a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper Friday afternoon in the Northland.

    The trooper stopped the man for a traffic violation about 1:35 p.m. on southbound Interstate 29 at U.S. 169, according to Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Green.

    After contacting the driver and obtaining his identification and insurance cards, the trooper returned to his patrol car. When he walked back to the man’s pickup, he found the driver slumped forward inside with a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    The Jackson County medical examiner pronounced the man, identified as 56-year-old William D. Peck of Kansas City, dead at the scene.

    Officers from the patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control responded to the scene to investigate the incident.

    KANSAS CITY | 22 arrests at checkpoint

    Police and Missouri Highway Patrol conducted a sobriety checkpoint this weekend.

    The operation was from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday at U.S. 169 and Lou Holland Drive.

    Officers stopped 1,670 vehicles during the checkpoint and arrested 22 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities also arrested one federal felon in possession of a firearm and one for state possession of cocaine, one for driving while license was revoked, one for driving with a suspended license, two for state warrants for driving under the influence and three for Kansas City warrants. They also issued two hazardous moving violations and two other unspecified traffic violations.

    KANSAS CITY | Police investigate homicide

    A Kansas City man was shot to death Friday as he left a house.

    According to police, Mark A. Palacio, 32, was walking out of a home in the 5500 block of East 23rd Street about 6:30 p.m. when someone shot him.

    Investigators were not sure if the shooter was in a vehicle or on foot.

    CLAY COUNTY | Teen killed in crash

    A 17-year-old boy was killed and two others seriously hurt when their vehicle failed to yield and collided with another vehicle Friday afternoon.

    The driver of the second vehicle also was seriously injured. The wreck occurred at 3:35 p.m. on Missouri 210 at Route JJ.

    The teens’ vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign on JJ and collided with a vehicle traveling east on 210, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

    Benjamin J. Gray of Missouri City died at the scene. The driver, Andrew J. Asmus of Excelsior Springs, and another passenger, Cory W. Roush of Missouri City, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries. None of the boys was wearing a seat belt, the patrol reported. The driver of the other vehicle, 49-year-old Daniel C. Shute of Bramer, Mo., also was taken to a hospital.

    KANSAS CITY | Wreck leaves one dead

    A man died in a single-vehicle accident in Kansas City early Saturday morning. Justin Williams, 24, of Raytown, died in the accident that occurred about 3:30 a.m. on Lee’s Summit Road just south of U.S. 40. He lost control of his vehicle, causing it to crash into a ditch, police said.

    No further details were available Saturday evening.
