These organizations have noted special needs for June:
• Help feed the hungry in Kansas City by adopting a grocery store in the area for a shift, day, or weekend. • Make a difference in another woman’s life who may be a new or single mother, or who just wants to learn to be a better parent. Volunteers for Mother to Mother must be dependable and compassionate. Contact Carla Golden, 913-782-4077, cgolden@catholiccharities.org.
• Be a nursing home friend/visitor at Villa St. Joseph. Make regular visits to chat, read and write letters, play cards or watch TV. Volunteers must be sociable and have an interest in sharing with older adults. Must be willing to commit to regular visits. Ongoing opportunities. • Read educational and heart-warming children’s books on tape for children in a day-care setting. It's a wonderful way to share your love of books with children and make them feel special at the same time. Contact Joy Hall, ReDiscover, 816-347-3246, jhall@rediscovermh.org.
• Site identification volunteers are needed to assist with a Kansas City tree planting project with Bridging the Gap. Training will be available, with volunteers working in teams of two or more to identify potential sites using maps of the city. • Offer help and support to teachers at The Children’s Place, a Kansas City agency serving children birth to 6 years old who have experienced complex trauma. Volunteers’ main task will be to assist in creating a nurturing, stimulating, positive learning environment for children. All volunteers must be at least 16 years old, be able to commit to at least 4 to 6 months with 3-4 hours per week, and complete a background check. • Become an on-call speaker’s bureau volunteer for Powell Gardens in eastern Jackson County. Duties include being a spokesperson, presenting and handing out information, answering questions, and representing the agency in a positive way. Volunteers must have strong presentation and verbal communications skills, the ability to work independently, and be willing to serve in an on-call position. Training provided. Flexible schedules. • Do you enjoy sharing a new adventure? Become an instructor for Girl Scouts of Mid-Continent Council. Duties include learning and teaching a new skill such as canoeing, kayaking, first aid, CPR or zip-lining. Volunteers must demonstrate skill in facilitating training using active learning principles and have a willingness to participate in job training. Flexible hours. • Do you have an interest in senior service programs and strategic planning? Clay County Senior Services is seeking new board members.
