KANSAS CITY | Man shot by officer

A man was in critical condition Thursday night after a Kansas City police officer shot him in the chest.

The 20-year-old man walked onto his porch at East Seventh Street and Spruce Avenue holding a shotgun pointed upward. As he began to lower the shotgun, one of two officers in front of his house fired one shot, according to Officer Darin Snapp of the Kansas City Police Department.

Police had gone to the man’s house around 7 p.m. because they suspected he was involved in a shootout a couple of hours before in the 5200 block of Scarritt Avenue.

The man also was wanted on two felony drug warrants and one concealed weapon warrant, Snapp said.

LAWRENCE | Student in critical condition

A University of Kansas graduate student was in critical condition Thursday at a Lawrence hospital after he ingested a toxic chemical.

The student is thought to have accidentally ingested sodium azide while working on the fifth floor of Malott Hall late Wednesday. Malott Hall was temporary evacuated as a precaution.

KANSAS CITY | Janitor accused of molestation

Prosecutors on Thursday accused a janitor of molesting a co-worker’s 8-year-old son at the Thornberry Unit of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kansas City in April.

They charged Jose L. Martinez, 33, with child molestation and statutory sodomy for alleged attacks that occurred after the boy’s mother brought him to work. She and Martinez worked for a company that had a contract to clean the facility near 43rd Street and Cleveland Avenue. Boys and Girls Club officials said the contract janitors worked only when the unit was closed.

KANSAS CITY | Homicide victim identified

Police identified a man shot to death Wednesday as Maurice West, 20, of Kansas City. He was walking with a friend near 116th Street and Holiday Drive about 4 p.m. when two men confronted them and argued with them.

PLATTE COUNTY | Man charged in tractor thefts

An Edgerton, Mo., man has been charged with stealing tractors and other large equipment from May through July.

Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd charged Michael Wayne Stroud, 48, with one count of felony stealing in the theft of four tractors, a travel trailer and a hay rake worth over $200,000.
