To virtually no one’s surprise, Missouri State Auditor Tom Schweich is officially in the 2016 race for governor.
Schweich made the announcement Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis. In a statement on his website, the Republican said “my administration will be about cleaning up the rampant corruption in Jefferson City.”
Schweich is scheduled to be in Kansas City Thursday to repeat the announcement.
He now faces an expensive and high-profile GOP primary with former Missouri House Speaker Catherine Hanaway.
“Auditor Schweich’s electoral record is marked by relentless pursuits of the next office and tearing apart the Republican Party,” a campaign spokesman said in a statement Wednesday.
The winner will likely face current Missouri AG Chris Koster in November 2016.
