A Republican representative from Parkville filed articles of impeachment Thursday against Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon.
Rep. Nick Marshall alleges that Nixon, a Democrat, violated the state’s constitution by issuing an executive order in November allowing same-sex couples who were legally married in other states to file joint tax returns in Missouri.
Missouri voters amended the state’s constitution in 2004 to ban same-sex marriage.
Seven other Republican lawmakers signed on as co-sponsors. One of those Republicans, Mike Moon of Ash Grove, said he also plans to file articles of impeachment alleging the governor didn’t act quickly enough to set special election dates for vacant legislative seats.
Asked about the issue Thursday, House Speaker Tim Jones said the House would study the matter and “move forward cautiously.”
But Rep. T.J. Berry of Kearney — one of the seven co-sponsors of Marshall’s articles of impeachment —told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
that it is unlikely the House will ever take the matter up for a vote.
House Minority Leader Jake Hummel, a St. Louis Democrat, said the push for impeachment “is further proof, as if any was needed, that the crazy wing has taken over the House Republican Caucus.”
