Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts says he opposes former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers to be the next Federal Reserve chair.
In fact, Roberts said he wouldn’t want Summers to “mow my yard.” The Republican said Federal Reserve Vice Chair Janet Yellen is more qualified.
The politically touchy issue centers on who will succeed Ben Bernanke.
Summers is “terribly controversial and brusque, and I don’t think he works well with either side of the aisle, quite frankly,” according to remarks reported by the Wichita Eagle.
In a follow-up interview with POLITICO on Tuesday, Roberts said he was “not putting Yellen yard signs out in Kansas” and had already planned to vote against her because of concerns she will continue “easy money” policies, despite believing that she’s better qualified than Summers.
“But I think you are as well,” Roberts said.
