Missouri House Republicans will have a race for speaker.
State Rep. Caleb Jones of California, Mo., announced on Monday that he will be a candidate for the speaker in 2015. Jones is chair of the General Laws Committee.
Leadership elections will be held this fall.
“I want every voice in our caucus to be heard,” said Jones. “I believe policy making is best done from the bottom up. I don’t care whose idea it is as long as it is a good idea.”
The House majority leader, John Diehl of Town and Country, is also expected to run.
Jones was first elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2012 without opposition. Jones would need 55 votes to win the election, something he believes is within reach.
“The Republican party thrives on competition,” said Jones. “We should have a robust debate about where we are going as a caucus and who is the best leader to take us there. I’m excited to get to work.”
