The polls are open in southeast Missouri, where voters are picking a replacement for former Rep. Jo Ann Emerson

, a Republican, in the state’s 8th Congressional district.

Emerson quit earlier this year to become a lobbyist.

Steve Hodges, the Democrat, faces Jason Smith

, the Republican. Smith is heavily favored in the GOP-dominated district.

Both are state legislators.

Bill Slantz is the Libertarian candidate. Doug Enyart is the Constitution party candidate. At least two other candidates are running as write-ins, according to reports from the district.
