Kansas Sens. Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts on Wednesday cheered the Air Force’s decision to pick McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita as the home for new refueling tankers.
The Air Force will make an official announcement later Wednesday morning after it informs the congressional delegations from the states involved of the decisions.
The decision is significant for McConnell
and the Wichita area because it puts the base in position to be a key factor in the Air Force’s plans for decades to come, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in economic impact.
“I couldn’t be more proud that McConnell Air Force Base has been selected as the Main Operating Base for the new KC-46A tankers,” Moran said. “Our state and the city of Wichita have a long history of supporting air mobility and standing behind the air men and women who call McConnell home, and I’m pleased the U.S. Air Force agrees that McConnell is the option whose location, capacity and mission will best meet our country’s needs.”
Said Roberts, “The Air Force’s refueling tankers have a long history in Kansas at both McConnell Air Force Base and Forbes Field, and it is great to learn that this esteemed history will continue with the KC-46A tanker mission.”
