A St. Louis area state senator Thursday morning called for federal investigators to expand their probe into the actions of Ferguson Police Department.
Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal said she wants the FBI and Justice Department to include potential civil rights violations of protestors.
“People have come to mourn and protest the killing of a young man. When does a peaceful gathering cause the police to use rubber bullets and sound cannons? Has the playbook not changed since Kent State? Have police tactics remained tear gas and water hoses? Can they not distinguish between a black man in a mask looting a store and crowd of black people discussing justice?” Chappelle-Nadal said.
In a statement, she added:
Never miss a local story.
“A black man is shot and killed. Tear gas is used. White journalists are arrested. A peaceful protest turns violent. What these things all have in common is the local police. Fifty-three officers, three black. This is not a department equipped to patrol its citizens.”
