A 47-year-old Kansas City man has been sentenced to life in prison for beating his girlfriend to death last year.
Morris L. Smith was sentenced Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court after pleading guilty in May to second-degree murder. He was convicted of killing Kimberly D. Hetzler, 36, at her home in the 1200 block of East 37th Street in Kansas City.
According to court records, police found Hetzler, who was 5-foot-3, beaten to death in her bedroom on Jan. 20, 2015. Smith had called 911 and initially told police he had found Hetzler dead.
Later, Smith told police that he and Hetzler had a violent relationship and that he hit her in the face. Police found blood on Smith’s clothes. During an interview with detectives, Smith allegedly said, “I’m going to jail for the rest of my life.”
“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,” Smith continued, according to court documents. “My mom and dad are going to kill me.”
