A veteran Bonner Springs Elementary School teacher has resigned after being charged with illegal drug possession.
Karen Kay Marshall, 51, was charged this week in Johnson County District Court with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Marshall, of Shawnee, was booked into the Johnson County jail Tuesday and was released from custody after posting a $5,000 bond. Her first court appearance is scheduled for July 7.
The charges say Marshall possessed the drug and a pipe on March 24. The case was investigated by Prairie Village police.
Officials with the Bonner Springs/Edwardsville Unified School District said they learned of Marshall’s arrest Thursday, and she resigned the same day. She taught at Bonner Springs Elementary School and was described as a “long-term” district employee.
“This issue is a police matter and we can only share that we are committed to the safety and well-being of our students and staff, and we are actively planning for a successful start to the 2016-17 school year,” the district said in a written statement.
Court records do not list an attorney for Marshall. A woman who answered the phone number listed for Marshall hung up when a reporter asked to speak to Marshall.
