A man jailed in Franklin County, Kan., was pronounced dead at a hospital after being found unconscious in his cell Friday night, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the death of Benjamin F. Mastel.
Mastel, 35, of Ottawa, Kan., was found unconscious in his one-person cell just before 10 p.m. Friday. Detention staff began CPR and used a defibrillator until emergency medical help arrived.
He was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
State law mandates such cases be investigated by the KBI.
Mastel had been in the facility since April 19, according to the sheriff’s office. He was being held on charges of aggravated battery and theft, according to court records.
