A 21-year-old Gladstone man is facing charges, accused of chasing a 13-year-old boy with a hatchet on Tuesday.
Clay County prosecutors have charged Joseph S. Havner with assault and armed criminal action after he allegedly attacked the 13-year-old as the boy passed by Havner’s home near Northeast 64th Street and North Broadway about 8 p.m.
According to court documents, Havner told police he recogonized the boy as someone who had stolen $40 from his home four months before.
The boy told police that Havner chased him, demanded the $40, tried to hit him several times and threatened him with a hatchet. The boy said he knew nothing about the $40.

A man visiting Havner’s home took the hatchet away from him. The boy’s mother arrived and confronted Havner, who was arrested by police.
When police asked Havner what he intended to do to the boy with the hatchet, Havner allegedly said “To be honest, I was going to kill him.”
Havner was in custody at the Clay County jail Wednesday night. Bond was set at $10,000.
