A man shot himself in the head late Saturday night in Gladstone after allegedly robbing a gas station, police said.

A police spokesman late Saturday could only describe the shooting as life-threatening. The man’s identity was not known Saturday night.

The man shot himself when police stopped him on Missouri 1 after he allegedly robbed a Trex Mart about 9:20 p.m., authorities said.

The clerk at the station was ordered to turn on the gas pump for $60 to fill up the green Jeep Liberty the man was driving.

As the man pumped the gas, the clerk reported the robbery to the police.

Gladstone police started tailing the man soon after he left the gas station.

When the vehicle came to a stop, the officers said they observed the driver raise a handgun, point it at his head and discharge the weapon.

The officers on the scene contacted the driver and found him unconcious. He was taken to a hospital.
