A man who engaged in a short armed standoff with Kansas City police Monday was taken into custody without incident.
The incident began shortly before 2:30 p.m. when police saw a car driving south at a high rate of speed in the northbound lanes of Prospect Avenue. Officers were not pursuing the car when they initially saw it but tried to follow it and possibly deploy a device to puncture its tires.
Within a few minutes, officers reported the car had crashed near Red Bridge Road and Cleveland Avenue. The driver reportedly was holding a handgun and “waving it around” after running from the vehicle.
Officers reported that they were too far from him to deploy a Taser and could not get a clear shot with a nonlethal bean-bag round.
Never miss a local story.
They were in the process of surrounding the area when the man dropped the gun and surrendered.
