A 16-year-old boy has been charged in the Monday night stabbing death of his 67-year-old grandmother at her home in Lawrence.
The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that the boy was charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Deborah Bretthauer. Authorities did not release his name.
Lawrence police said Bretthauer was found dead inside her home in the 1200 block of George Court.
The 16-year-old called police after reporting that he had found her dead. He was taken into custody after being questioned by police.
A hearing to determine if the boy should remain in detention while the case is pending is scheduled for Thursday, according to prosecutors.
