Prosecutors charged a 26-year-old woman Tuesday in the shooting death of her former boyfriend Sunday as he sat inside a sport utility vehicle in south Kansas City.
Lauren Littlejohn of Kansas City faces charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the slaying of 25-year-old Deontay Campbell about 1 p.m. Sunday near Bristol Terrace and Longview Road. Campbell died of a gunshot wound to the left side of his head as he sat in the driver’s seat of a white Chevrolet Tahoe.
According to court records, Littlejohn and Campbell had been in a relationship but had broken up. When Campbell visited Littlejohn on Sunday, the two argued.
Littlejohn initially told investigators that Campbell took her .380-caliber handgun, drove away and shot himself. She told investigators she watched Campbell’s vehicle travel off the street and into a grassy area.
She went to investigate, found her handgun inside the SUV and took it, she told police.
After Littlejohn consented to a search of her house, investigators found the handgun underneath sheets on a bed.
They also found shattered glass on the street just south of Littlejohn’s residence, according to court records.
Witnesses told police they heard a loud noise, looked up the street and saw Littlejohn in her driveway. Glass in the street had not been there before the shooting, they told police.
The medical examiner, which ruled the death a homicide, said the gunshot was fired more than 3 feet from the victim.
When questioned a second time by detectives, Littlejohn acknowledged that she shot once at Campbell’s car knowing he was inside, according to court records.
