A Jackson County judge sentenced a 59-year-old man to 20 years in prison for killing his mother at her Kansas City home.

Richard A. Ohearn, of Independence, entered a no-contest plea in June to charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Nancy Ohearn, 78.

Ohearn called 911 late the evening of July 26, 2013, saying his mother had been shot and was dead. Police found her lying face down, with an injury to the back of her head and a gunshot wound to the back, court records said.

After Richard Ohearn was taken to police headquarters, officers heard him ask, “I killed my mother, didn’t I?”
