A Kansas City woman awoke early Friday to an intruder holding a liquid-soaked rag over her mouth, police said.

The woman struggled free and ran to a neighbor’s house for help. The intruder may have fired a shot at her before fleeing, according to police reports.

Police were called to investigate just after 5 a.m. Friday in the 9400 block of Manchester Avenue.

The victim told police that the rag smelled like gasoline. Police found a hammer and a bottle containing a liquid that smelled like gasoline on her bed. They found a black and white mask outside a rear glass door that the intruder broke to get inside the house.

After she ran from the house, the woman said the intruder chased her with a gun. The neighbor told police he thought he heard a gunshot before the woman began knocking on his door yelling for help.

According to police reports, the woman believed the attack was related to an ongoing family situation.
