A man armed with a handgun who refused to leave an east Kansas City motel during a three-hour standoff with police has surrendered, according to authorities.
Kansas City police were called to the Super Budget Inn near U.S. 40 at Phelps Road just after 4 a.m.
Paramedics told officers that a man pointed a gun at them from inside the hotel room when they responded to an emergency call. Paramedics left and the man closed the door and refused to leave.
Police blocked off traffic in the area near the motel while a negotiator talked to the man, who later surrendered. He was taken to a hospital for an evaluation, police said.
