It’s a banner year for test scores Blue Valley Northwest High School. Five students got perfect ACT scores, two earned perfect SAT scores and 20 are on the list of National Merit semi-finalists.
It wasn’t a surprise to the school’s principal, Amy Murphy.
“This group of seniors was in kindergarten, going in to first grade, when I became principal (here). I have heard that that they were a group of an exceptional people, so I have watched them,” she said. “I’ve heard all along as they’ve done other assessments, and I just knew this was going to be an exceptional year for students and academic performance.”
Murphy had heard about preliminary PSAT scores from this group and even before the National Merit standings were announced, she knew that at least 29 students had scored in the right range to be considered for semi-finalist status.
It used to be that the schools would find out about high scores before the students, but now that students can find out their scores online, the students usually know before the school does, Murphy said.
She credits the high number of students with high test scores to the support they get from their peers and the school. The school recognizes any individual student receiving a perfect ACT or SAT score with a football jersey with a 36 or 24, representing the perfect 36 on the ACT or 2400 on the SAT.
“They’re so excited for each other. I don’t hear the negative comments,” Murphy said. “It’s just kind of set a tone in our building. The underclassmen are seeing repeatedly us handing out one or more jerseys. … “This is not just the work of the high school. This is the work of the K-12 feeder system in the Northwest area and what they’ve done with the kids from kindergarten.”
