Entrepreneur creates entertainment district for Overland Park to call its own

For two years, entrepreneur Shawn McClenny has been putting together a mini-entertainment district for Johnson County.
He’s now tied the four concepts together — a French fusion bistro/nightclub, an upscale billiards parlor/lounge, a country bar/live music venue with dance floor, and sports bar— under one umbrella called One Block South. A gated outdoor patio ties them together in Rosana Square at 7300 W. 119th St., just west of Metcalf Avenue.
“Throughout the city, we have Westport, Martini Corner, Waldo, the Plaza. But Overland Park really didn’t have an entertainment district,” McClenny said. “I wanted to create one that it could call its own.”
McClenny took over Raoul’s Velvet Room in Rosana Square in 1999. He kept the name but changed the concept. Five years later he added Fuel — American Made Bar Grill, a motorsports-themed sports bar. He was looking for a venue for a country bar when his Rosana Square landlord offered him a 10,000-square-foot space next to his two operations.
Kanza Hall opened a year ago. The country bar/live music venue is open from 5:55 p.m. to 2 a.m., Wednesday through Saturday. While the format is mostly country, it also features regional and national bands of all types. It also has DJs on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and one of the metro’s longest bars at about 70 feet.
Next door, McClenny downsized his Fuel and added Red 8 Billiards, an upscale billiards’ parlor and lounge serving such items as gourmet pizza-by-the slice and house salad, along with cocktails, wine, draft and bottled beer.
Lastly, McClenny shut down his Raoul’s restaurant to make way for Milieu, a casual French-fusion bistro, which opened earlier this year for dinner only.
Executive chef Jim Pearch had been with J. Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks Seafood before joining McClenny nine years ago. Calvin Davis, grandson of Rich Davis, founder of KC Masterpiece, is Milieu’s sous chef.
Davis said customer favorites include the champagne mussels, the Bistro Burger (with cheddar, bacon, onion marmalade and mustard aioli on a brioche bun), a grilled chicken sandwich (with Brie, Dijon balsamic glaze, and apple chutney on a brioche bun), the arugula bruschetta (over easy egg, bacon, truffle oil, and Parmesan on French bread), along with entrees like the steak frites and the chicken and French toast.
Milieu also has a small nightclub in a side room with plush couches surrounding a small dance floor.
The four venues, which are drawing a diverse age group, also are available to rent out for private parties.Store additions
The momentum continues for Corbin Park.
After landing mega sports superstore Scheels, which plans to open on the east side of the center in mid-2015, several smaller tenants also are coming on board.
• Corner Bakery Cafe plans to put up an 8,000-square-foot building in the center, near Von Maur. If all goes as planned, it will open in half the space later this year and lease out the other 4,000 square feet to another tenant.
• BrewTop Pub Patio, a sports bar and live music venue, plans an early September opening. The locally owned company also has locations in Lee’s Summit and the Northland.
• Locally owned Visionary Jewelers has signed a lease and plans to relocate from 9155 W. 133rd St., in Overland Park, later this year.
Sprouts Farmers Market, Kirkland’s, Stein Mart and Ulta Beauty are under construction in the center and all three plan to open in the first quarter of 2014.
