An Olathe third-graders interest in belt-driven drum fans has him in the running to be the next KNEXpert.

Jackson Rees, 9, who attends Prince of Peace Catholic School in Olathe, has been picked as a semi-finalist in the construction toy makers 2014 KNEXpert Search building contest.

Hes had an interest in fans since he was a little kid, said Jacksons mother, Peggy Rees. Its just something hes really interested in.

Jackson made a replica of a belt-driven drum fan using the toy companys construction set.

The next stage of the contest is an online vote. The three entries in each age category that receive the most votes will become finalists.

The companys senior vice president of product development will select four grand prize winners one from each age group.

Jackson is hoping to win because one of the prizes is a chance to tour the companys manufacturing facility in Hatfield, Penn., his mother said.

Online voting runs through Oct. 14 at the

companys website, www.knex.com.

We are very proud of him, his mother said, and excited about all of the support and encouragement he has received.
