Great weather smiles again on SM North Relays

The 63rd Shawnee Mission North Relays were held last Friday in nearly-perfect weather, a contrast to last year when the meet was was canceled because of snow and cold weather, the first cancellation of the meet.

“The meet started in 1950,” SM North Athletic Director George Sallas said. “In 2012, (the temperature) was in the 90s, last year it was snow and cold, but this year the weather is perfect.”

Olathe East dominated the boys’ events.

Senior DaJuane Box of Olathe East won the 200 meters in 22.11 seconds, junior AJ Stephens captured the 110 hurdles in 14.24, senior Caelan Neal spanned 47 feet, three-fourths of an inch to win the triple jump and the Hawks captured the 400 relay in 42.18, the 1,600 relay in 3 minutes, 21.72 seconds and 3,200 relay in 8:03.58.

The premier event of the night was the Mark Sageser 1,600 run. The event is named after the former SM North distance runner, who died in 2006.

SM North senior Ben Burchstead, who trailed Olathe North’s Easton Moore for most the race, made his move in the last 400 meters, caught up coming off the last curve and won the sprint to the tape by less than one second. Burchstead's winning time was 4:20.56, Moore's was 4:21.44.

“I had been working in practice on the last 400,” said Burchstead, a senior “I told myself to sit there and be patient. I knew I could close in the last 100 meters.”

St. James Academy senior Ian Jones led from start to finish in winning the 800 in record time of 1:54.01. The previous record of 1:54.56 was set in 2005.

Blue Valley Northwest senior Sam Guinn was on pace to challenge one of the meet's oldest records in the 3,200, established in 1971 by Kent McDonald of Lawrence. He won the event by 20 seconds in 9:16.71, but he missed the record by about 11 seconds.

Olathe South senior Tanner Green won the 400 in 48.89.

On the girls’ side, Olathe East senior Jasmine Thomas won two events, the 100 in 12.27 and 200 in 26.03.

Olathe East senior Kelsey Lathrop won the 400 in 58.06.

Maranatha Academy junior Lauren Harrell came from behind on the last half-lap of he 3,200 to win in 11:04.1.

Kelly McKee, a St. James Academy senior, won the 300 hurdles in 44.81.

Shawnee Mission South senior Brooke Holmes captured two jumping events, the long jump with 18-4 ½ and the triple jump with 39-1 3/4.
