EASTERN KANSAS LEAGUE 1. Gardner Edgerton (4-1, 4-1 EKL)

Last week: Defeated Blue Valley West 27-24

An oft-noted offense watched from the sideline as the defense made two vital fourth-quarter stops.

2. Bishop Miege (4-1, 4-1 EKL)

Last week: Defeated Blue Valley Southwest 37-12

The Stags' defense returned to form last Friday after allowing 56 points the previous week to Gardner Edgerton.

3. Blue Valley Northwest (3-2, 3-2 EKL)

Last week: Defeated Blue Valley 31-28

Maybe the Huskies are for real after all. That's back-to-back wins against Blue Valley West and Blue Valley.

4. Blue Valley (3-2, 2-2 EKL)

Last week: Lost to Blue Valley Northwest 31-28

A four-touchdown game from quarterback Logan Brettell wasn't enough for the Tigers, who were unable to hang on late.

5. Blue Valley West (3-2, 2-2 EKL)

Last week: Lost to Gardner Edgerton 27-24

That's back-to-back hard-fought losses for the Jaguars, who have an opportunity to notch a big win Friday at Bishop Miege.

6. Blue Valley Southwest (3-2, 2-2 EKL)

Last week: Lost to Bishop Miege 37-12

The Timberwolves have been unable to hang with the conference's best. That could change this week against Blue Valley Northwest.

7. St. Thomas Aquinas (1-4, 1-3 EKL)

Last week: Defeated Blue Valley North 48-0

It's about time. The Saints are finally in the win column after having won 10 games last season.

8. Blue Valley North (0-5, 0-5 EKL)

Last week: Lost to St. Thomas Aquinas 48-0

It doesn't get any easier for the Mustangs. They travel to face Gardner Edgerton on Friday.

SUNFLOWER LEAGUE 1. Shawnee Mission East (5-0, 5-0 SL)

Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission South 27-21 (OT)

Another close victory. The Lancers have won their last three games by a combined 11 points.

2. Lawrence Free State (4-1, 4-1 SL)

Last week: Lost to Olathe North 26-19

The Firebirds can reclaim control of the Sunflower League on Friday by defeating Shawnee Mission East.

3. Olathe North (3-2, 3-2 SL)

Last week: Defeated Lawrence Free State 26-19

That's more like it. A victory against previously-unbeaten Free State vaults the Eagles back into conference title contention.

4. Shawnee Mission West (3-2, 3-2 SL)

Last week: Lost to Leavenworth 37-34

The Vikings will be playing with heavy hearts in honor of teammate Andre Maloney, who died last Friday.

5. Olathe East (3-2, 3-2 SL)

Last week: Defeated Olathe South 21-12

The Hawks are flying under the radar, but their schedule shapes up nicely over the next month.

6. Olathe South (3-2, 3-2 SL)

Last week: Lost to Olathe East 21-12

If the Falcons are to make a late-season run, they need more production from the offense.

7. Shawnee Mission South (2-3, 2-3 SL)

Last week: Lost to Shawnee Mission East 27-21 (OT)

The Raiders have been competitive in every game, but they need to start closing out victories.

8. Lawrence (2-3, 2-3 SL)

Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission Northwest 16-7

Make it two in a row for the Lions, who have rebounded from their unlikely 0-3 start.

9. Olathe Northwest (2-3, 2-3 SL)

Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission North 42-12

Both offense and defense turned in its most productive game of the season.

10. Leavenworth (2-3, 2-3 SL)

Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission West 37-34

The Pioneers picked a fine time for their best offensive outing.

11. Shawnee Mission Northwest (1-4, 1-4 SL)

Last week: Lost to Lawrence 16-7

After totaling more than 400 yards two weeks ago, the Cougars follow it with an offensive dud.

12. Shawnee Mission North (0-5, 0-5 SL)

Last week: Lost to Olathe Northwest 42-12

The Indians are still searching for their first victory under Don Simmons.
