EASTERN KANSAS LEAGUE 1. Blue Valley (3-1, 2-1 EKL)

Last week: Defeated Blue Valley North 56-10

As conference leaders, Blue Valley West and Bishop Miege lost, but the Tigers coasted to victory and back into league title contention.

2. Gardner Edgerton (3-1, 3-1 EKL)

Last week: Defeated Bishop Miege 56-51

It's hard to believe the Trailblazers were shut out in their opener. They have scored 153 points in three games since.

3. Bishop Miege (3-1, 3-1 EKL)

Last week: Lost to Gardner Edgerton 56-51

Where did that come from? The Stags played well defensively for the first three games. Last Friday? Not so much.

4. Blue Valley West (3-1, 2-1 EKL)

Last week: Lost to Blue Valley Northwest 28-21 (OT)

The running game disappeared for the Jaguars, who were held under 100 rushing yards in the unlikely loss.

5. Blue Valley Northwest (2-2, 2-2 EKL)

Last week: Defeated Blue Valley West 28-21 (OT)

The Huskies were looking for a signature win, and they sure earned one, holding on to beat conference-leading Blue Valley West.

6. Blue Valley Southwest (3-1, 2-1 EKL)

Last week: Defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 34-14

The Timberwolves earned a nice bounce-back win, setting up the potential for a program-defining victory at Bishop Miege.

7. St. Thomas Aquinas (0-4, 0-3 EKL)

Last week: Lost to Blue Valley Southwest 34-14

It's getting more perplexing each week. The Saints' defense can't stop much of anything right now.

8. Blue Valley North (0-4, 0-4 EKL)

Last week: Lost to Blue Valley 56-10

More of the same from the Mustangs, who face St. Thomas Aquinas this week. One team will earn its first victory.

SUNFLOWER LEAGUE 1. Lawrence Free State (4-0, 4-0 SL)

Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission West 35-14

The Firebirds jump into the driver's seat in the conference, but it's far too early to put it on cruise control.

2. Shawnee Mission West (3-1, 3-1 SL)

Last week: Lost to Lawrence Free State 35-14

An important reminder: The Vikings lost to Free State last season, too — you know, before they won the Class 6A state title.

3. Shawnee Mission East (4-0, 4-0 SL)

Last week: Defeated Olathe North 23-22

The Lancers are finding ways to win games late. They have won their last two contests by a combined six points.

4. Olathe South (3-1, 3-1 SL)

Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission South 21-7

It's not always necessarily pretty, but the Falcons are finding a variety of ways to win games. And that's what matters.

5. Shawnee Mission South (2-2, 2-2 SL)

Last week: Lost to Olathe South 21-7

If the Raiders are going to take a leap forward in the Sunflower League, they must see improvement with their offense.

6. Olathe North (2-2, 2-2 SL)

Last week: Lost to Shawnee Mission East 23-22

It's not too late to jump back into the conference race. A home victory against Lawrence Free State would help the Eagles' cause.

7. Olathe East (2-2, 2-2 SL)

Last week: Defeated Shawnee Mission North 61-12

The Hawks were finally able to breathe easily last week after three nail biters to open the season.

8. Lawrence (1-3, 1-3 SL)

Last week: Defeated Olathe Northwest 35-20

That was a much-needed victory for the Lions, who travel to face Shawnee Mission Northwest in search of a winning streak.

9. Olathe Northwest (1-3, 1-3 SL)

Last week: Lost to Lawrence 35-20

The offense has been steady, scoring 21 points per game. The defense? It has left much to be desired at times.

10. Shawnee Mission Northwest (1-3, 1-3 SL)

Last week: Defeated Leavenworth 42-21

After a pair of tough-luck losses in the first three weeks, the Cougars notched a well-deserved victory last Friday.

11. Leavenworth (1-3, 1-3 SL)

Last week: Lost to Shawnee Mission Northwest 42-21

Turnovers doomed the Pioneers once again. They gave away the ball four times.

12. Shawnee Mission North (0-4, 0-4 SL)

Last week: Lost to Olathe East 61-12

The offense is starting to play better, but the Indians are far from putting it all together.
