Haley Hynes has put together a rather unforgettable introduction to high school swimming. As a freshman at Lee's Summit North High School, she won two individual state championships last February.
A year later, the roll continues.
Hynes has picked up exactly where she left off, dominating her peers in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke — the same events she won last season at the Missouri State High School Activities Association state championships.
Her good fortune continued last Saturday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia. She was crowned the champion of the 200 IM and the 100 freestyle at the prestigious COMO Invitational, a 25-team event featuring high schools from throughout the state.
It was close, however. Hynes edged Kearney junior Madison Strathman by less than one second in the 200 IM. Hynes finished in 2 minutes and 11.04 seconds, with Strathman touching the wall in 2:11.96.
Hynes' winning margin in the 100 backstroke was more clear where she defeated second-place Tori Beeler of Park Hill South by nearly four seconds. Blue Springs South junior Kayla Canon was third.
In other news from the COMO Invitational, Raymore-Peculiar sophomore Maddi Brusick won the 50-yard freestyle event, turning in the event's fourth best time in the state this season. Belton's Katie Giacone finished third and Blue Springs South's Taylor Branson placed fifth in the same event.
Notre Dame de Sion's Margaret Brandmeyer won the one-meter diving competition. Blue Springs South diver Allie Steinhauser took third, and Notre Dame de Sion diver Rebecca Jacobs was fourth.
Notre Dame de Sion's Hannah Spoolstra placed fourth in the 100 butterfly, followed by Lee's Summit West sophomore Sarah Raymond in fifth.
Blue Springs South's Bailey Barnett took fifth in the 100 freestyle, and her teammate Kadie Clark placed fifth in the 500 freestyle.
Blue Springs South fared well in the relay events to drive up the Jaguars' point total. The Jaguars were fourth in the 200 medley and 200 free relays and fifth in the 400 free relay. Lee's Summit North finished fifth in the 200 medley relay.
Park Hill South was tops in the team standings. Also in he top 10 were Blue Springs South third, Notre Dame de Sion sixth, Lee's Summit High seventh and Lee's Summit West ninth.Hy-Vee Shootout update
Previously postponed because of inclement weather, the final two games of the annual Hy-Vee Shootout have been rescheduled for Saturday at Avila University.
Lee's Summit West and Blue Valley Northwest collide at 6 p.m. with Blue Springs South and Shawnee Mission South to follow. Both games will be shown on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
Two Missouri teams — Lee's Summit West and Blue Springs South — are coming off championship victories at the Niles Media Group Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament at William Jewell College in Liberty. Blue Springs South defeated Park Hill South in the championship game of the Nelson Division. Lee's Summit West downed Raymore-Peculiar to win the Patterson Division title.Panthers win at home
Oak Grove finished with a perfect 5-0 record in their home wrestling tournament last Saturday. Oak Grove defeated Warrensburg, Blue Springs South, Lee's Summit North, Rockhurst and Cameron in the Panther Duals.
The Panthers are the top-ranked team in Missouri Class 2. They won their 14th state championship last season.
