A little building on Prospect Avenue has been home to several restaurants, some that have moved on to higher profile spots.

Now a new operation has moved in: Mo’s Italian Spot — “Mo” for Monica Abato Malik who is using recipes from her Italian grandparents. Malik and her husband, Raheem Malik, opened the restaurant earlier this month at 5932 Prospect Ave.

“We thought we would offer something different, something that no one else was offering around here,” said Raheem Malik.

The restaurant serves sandwiches like a hot Italian beef, chicken spiedini, and Scimeca’s Italian sausage, as well as entrees like Shrimp Diavolo and spaghetti with meatballs or Italian sausage. The menu also includes fried chicken wings, chicken tacos, fish tacos and cheeseburgers.

The space formerly housed such operations as Lutfi’s Fried Fish and Chicken, and Niecie’s Restaurant.

Zona Rosa marking 10th year, adding tenants

Zona Rosa, the Northland’s mixed-use development of retail, restaurants, entertainment, commercial and residential, is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The center, on 93 acres at the northwest corner of Interstate 29 and Barry Road, currently has 97 retailers, 21 restaurants, and 49 apartments.

Now it is adding two more tenants to its roster.

Simply Mac, a retailer of Apple products, will enter the market with a new Zona Rosa store scheduled to open June 7.

Simply Mac sells such products as Apple computers, iPods, iPads, and iPhones. Consumers also can trade in their old products for credit, and purchase certified pre-owned Apple computers and iPads.

Founded in 2006, Simply Mac also offers personalized classes, as well as in- and out-of-warranty service and repair for Apple products.

It will take a 2,500-square-foot spot at 7109 N.W. 86th Terrace by The Buckle.

Simply Mac is based in Salt Lake City and has 24 locations.

Soma Intimates, a division of Chico’s FAS Inc., will open its third area location.

The shops sell lingerie, loungewear, dresses, fragrance and beauty products. A summer opening is planned for the 2,200-square-foot store at 8729 N.W. Prairie View Road, next to Clarks footwear in the Dillard’s district.

Zona Rosa’s 10th anniversary celebrations are ongoing.

Through the end of the month, customers presenting $100 in same-day Zona Rosa receipts will receive a free $10 Zona Rosa gift card while supplies last.

Then, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on June 14 it will have an anniversary concert with Rattle and Hum KC, a U2 tribute band, performing at the center’s Town Square.

Zona Rosa’s “Change for Charity” program also has raised more than $1 million from funds collected at its parking meters over the last decade. The funds have benefited more than 180 non-profits.

It also has free parking in its covered parking garages and surface lots.
