Three new restaurants rise in the Southland

The Stack BBQ went dark earlier this year with little notice.

But new owners reopened it April 1 as The Stack BarBQ.

Jeff Hallier and Heather Dukes remodeled the space at 8920 Wornall Road but kept the same menu. They also have added new menu items — Pigskin Poppers (roasted garlic cream cheese stuffed jalapeno wrapped in bacon and smoked in the pit) and a cinnamon roll bread pudding with a bourbon creme anglaise.

“We’ll keep adding items as we go, including a cucumber, tomato and onion side salad,” Hallier said.

Longtime regulars are glad to have a barbecue back in the space, he said, and he’s pleased to see plates coming back to the kitchen where customers have finished every bite.

“I think that’s a good sign,” Hallier said.

Smokestack BBQ also had long operated in the space. After it closed, one of its longtime employees partnered with a best friend from childhood who had worked at Smokestack during the summers. Together they opened The Stack BBQ in early 2012. They built a loyal following since then, and some of those customers have still showed up, disappointed to find the barbecue closed.

The new Stack BarBQ offers sandwiches and dinners including sliced meat platters, ribs, burnt ends and a half chicken. Sides include potato salad, cheesy corn, baked beans and sweet potato tots.

•  Peachtree Cafeteria Brunch-Lunch-Dinner is now open in the former Papa Lew’s Soul Delicious spot in Gates Plaza, 2128 E. 12th St.

Vera Willis, co-owner of The Peachtree Buffet, has not returned phone calls on the new cafeteria.

Peachtree is known for its soul food, traditional Southern cuisine and comfort food — fried chicken, oxtails, Salisbury steak, baked tilapia, meat loaf, Mississippi fried catfish, and peach cobbler. Other items that are coming soon to the cafeteria include fried shrimp, blackened shrimp and “jazzy” wings.

Brunch also is scheduled to start soon, according to a manager.

Vera and Lavell Willis opened the all-you-can-eat Peachtree Buffet on Eastwood Trafficway in 1996. Six years later they added a location in the 18th Vine district, but they relocated that restaurant to the Power Light District in 2008.

After two years of operations, the Power Light restaurant filed for bankruptcy reorganization and it closed in late 2010.

•  Margarita’s first opened in Martin City in 1995.

Sales were strong for more than a decade but by 2008 sales were slipping. Dave Quirarte, president, had health problems requiring surgery and had to rely on management. He closed the restaurant at 13401 Holmes Road and tried to sell the building. When he couldn’t find a buyer he signed a three-year contract with Swagger to open in the spot. Swagger operated in the space for a short time before closing.

The building has been remodeled and the new Margarita’s South opened Thursday. It has the same menu as the other Margarita’s restaurants, including daily food and drink specials.

Margarita’s was founded in 1985 and has locations on Southwest Boulevard, Lenexa, Liberty and Gladstone.

It also sells Margarita’s Amigos products, including salsa, taco seasoning, and chicken seasoning.

Zona Rosa getting new Avon Mega Store

Instead of Avon calling on them, these customers are calling on Avon.

Elizabeth Demas has had an Avon Mega Store at 11034 Quivira Road in Overland Park for nine years. Now she’s opened an Avon Mega Store in Zona Rosa, 7328 N.W. 87th Terrace, next to Dillard’s.

She sells the same customer favorites as in the Avon catalogs, under such categories as makeup, body care, skin care, fragrance and nails.

Demas said there are several reasons for an Avon store. Maybe the customers just buy Skin So Soft in the summer and they don’t need a regular sales representative. Maybe they are out of eyeliner and can’t wait a week or two for an order to come in, or maybe they want to see all the different colors of eyeshadow, smell all the perfumes and try all the lotions.

Indeed, her Overland Park store is one of the top-performing licensed Avon Beauty Centers in the nation, said Lauren Haralson, Avon spokeswoman. Still, Demas says she does not set quotas for her employees and has even “down sold” one client who was buying two lotions and only needed one.

“I lost a $30 sale, but then she knows I am going to steer her right. I want to make sure people get what they need,” she said.

Another owner had previously operated an Avon store at another Zona Rosa location. It closed at the end of the year.

Sam’s Club near Liberty to open this summer

A new Northland Sam’s Club is scheduled to open this summer near Liberty.

It has already hired 50 employees but needed 135 more. So on Thursday it opened a “hiring and membership center” at 913 W. Liberty Drive, Liberty.

The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Positions still available include cashiers, cart pushers, cake decorators, tire technicians and overnight stockers. Through its Veterans Welcome Home Commitment, Sam’s Club also is looking for qualified veterans who have been honorably discharged within the last 12 months.

Area residents and businesses also will be able to apply for Sam’s Club memberships and receive a gift certificate.
