Cellar & Loft wine shop adds craft beers and pizza

The bad news — Boston Market recently shut down in BarryWoods Crossing.

The good news — that closing is triggering new development in the Northland center.

Sources say a single tenant, possibly a cell phone company, plans to take the Boston Market space at 6505 N.W. Barry Road, as well as the former Einstein Bros Bagels space next door at 6507 Barry Road. Construction already has begun.

Chick-fil-A, Atlanta, Ga., purchased the former Lone Star Steakhouse Saloon building in BarryWoods Crossing, 6501 N.W. Barry Road, last summer. Sources say the 5,500-square-foot building on 1.2 acres is to be torn down for the new Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A officials said they “look forward to serving the area in the future. At this time, we do not have a set date.”

Boston Market said it had operated in the Northland space since April 1997 and closed the location “due to a termination of lease.” There are no plans to open another Boston Market in the area.

New Diego’s closes in Gladstone

Less than three months after opening, Diego’s Bar Grill has closed in the Northland.

Ivan Marquez and Marco Diaz opened Diego’s at 6024 N.E. Antioch Road, Suite B, Gladstone, in early December 2013. But Marquez had a heart attack shortly before the restaurant opened. He also is the owner of two Overland Park restaurants and his doctor wanted him to slow down.

Then Diaz’s father passed away and he had to make several trips to Mexico, Marquez said.

“Business at Diego’s was starting to pick up but I didn’t have anyone to run it,” Marquez said. “The three restaurants were so demanding and all of a sudden I was by myself.”

Marquez also owns Frida’s Taqueria in Overland Park.

Cellar Loft new beers pizzas

Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Eddie Kennison, along with Bill and Maggie Dane, opened Cellar Loft wine shop at 525 Walnut St. in the River Market three years ago. In late 2013 they took over the spot next door, knocking down a wall and opening up the space for a pizza operation.

“People would come in for our wine and go elsewhere for dinner. We wanted to make this a destination,” Kennison said.

The menu includes bruschetta, mushroom caps, beer bread bites, pizza roll medallions, and housemade pita and hummus. Mitchell Mey, who likes the title “cook” better than “chef,” oversees the pizza, including Italian meat (pepperoni, capicola, and Italian sausage), the Mediterranean (vegetables, Kalamata olives, garlic and oil), and the Three Cheese (mozzarella, provolone and Gouda).

Mey also offers a monthly pizza special. In February it was the Fast Eddie (Alfredo sauce, seasoned baked chicken, and roasted bell peppers, along with mozzarella, provolone and honey goat cheese). This month it’s the Big Hoss (a steak pizza using Mey’s special pizza sauce and The Sauce from Hillsdale Bank Bar B.Q.

Josh Davis oversees the beers. He has 14 craft beers on tap and hopes to offer as many as 24. The lineup currently includes New Holland Blue Sunday, an American wild ale from Holland, Mich.; Green Flash Hop Odyssey, a Black IPA from San Diego, Calif.; and Odell Lugene, a chocolate milk stout from Fort Collins, Colo.

Cellar Loft’s retail area wine, beer and its own line of bottled specialty foods — spicy chipotle olives, mango line salsa, pickled asparagus, candied jalapenos and more. It also sells Christopher Elbow Artisanal Chocolates.
