Northland Children’s Drawing Contest
Winning artwork: Four winners were selected from among 45 entries in the competition sponsored by the Children’s Section of the North Kansas City Library and the North Kansas City Kiwanis Club.
The theme for the contest was “my favorite animal.” Winning in the age group of 11 to 12 years old was Ann Phan with a drawing of dolphins; in the age group of 9 to 10 years old, Sarah New with a drawing of a butterfly; in the age group of 7 to 8 years old, Justus Standlea with a drawing of a leopard; and in the age group of 5 to 6 years old, Carson Standlea with a drawing of a bald eagle.
The winners were awarded $25 gift cards from the North Kansas City branch of Country Club Bank.
Winning entries were matted and framed. All 45 entries will be on display at the library in August.
Educator recognized: Shannon Lawson was honored for exemplary service in the community.
She was selected to sit in the Buck O’Neil Legacy Seat at a Kansas City Royals baseball game. Lawson has raised more than $32,000 for the American Cancer Society in the past 17 years at the academy’s annual bowl-a-thon.
Park Hill High School
Athletes earn award: The volleyball team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award.
The team qualified for the award by maintaining a cumulative 3.4 grade-point average during the 2015-2016 school year.
Team members were 2016 graduates Brooke Albracht, Sabrina Corley, Kennedi Dorrell, Bre Rodgers, Kate Safford and Gabby Sweeney; seniors Tyah Barnett Chelsea Edwards; and juniors Kayla Huffman, Madison Michaelis, Lexi Reneau and Kai Welsh.
Team managers were Grant Martin, a senior, and Cami Forret, a junior.
