The 18 girls could not quite decide if they wanted to help dogs, cats or firefighters.
They decided to help them all in a Canine Carnival, Feline Fair and Fire Fighting Fun Fair hosted by Girl Scout Troop 566. The girls, from four Liberty School District elementary schools, held the fair at the Benson Place Neighborhood Park.
Leader Kiersten Wilson says the girls created the fair to earn their Bronze Award in Girl Scouts, which is one of three top awards in Girl Scouts. The girls created the stations and ran the event themselves.
“It teaches them a lot of leadership skills and to be community-minded,” Wilson said. “This group is very good with service projects. They are always wanting to do a service project rather than just a fun activity.”
Girls made dog treats and toys and held a dog talent show and dog fashion show.
They also invited firefighters out to teach neighbors about fire safety and how to be safe in emergencies.
The project raised money for the Great Plains SPCE and the Fire Fighters Local 42 Community Assistance Fund.
