National Scholastic Press Association
Broadcast journalists: Two Northland schools are among 10 finalists nationwide for Broadcast Sports Story of the Year.
Liberty High School and Oak Park High School journalists will compete for the top honor in the National Scholastic Press Association’s contest.
From Liberty High School, a sports feature story, “Goodbye, Cokely,” by Morgan Fleming and Isaac Knopf, was chosen for the competition.
Never miss a local story.
From Oak Park High School, the “Swim team sends four to state” sports story is competing at the national level. Jordyn Bensyl and Kaleb Murray reported the story last winter as the girls swim team prepared its relay for state competition.
Finalists will be recognized and winners announced at the national high school journalism convention in November in Orlando, Fla.
Platte County R-3 High School
Student recognized: Spencer Kunz, a junior, was invited to discuss his musical honors and experiences at the September meeting of the board of education.
Spencer attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts this summer in Michigan where he studied with leading French horn players. In 2016, he will travel to Ireland with the Youth Symphony of Kansas City and to Nashville with the National Association for Music Education’s All-National Honor Ensembles Concert Band.
This is the second year he has been invited to perform with the national honor band. Spencer is a drum major in the high school band.
