Parkville Chamber prepares for gala, and other community notes

Parkville Chamber Gala

The Parkville Area Chamber of Commerce Gala and awards banquet is Jan. 24 at the Embassy Suites at KCI.

The event spotlights small businesses and is a benefit for both the chamber and this year’s charity of choice — The Friends of the Parkville Animal Shelter.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and include a silent and live auction, dinner and awards.

Awards will be given for best new business, business of the year, outstanding community partner and other categories.

Auction items include Chief’s tickets, dinner at The National with Royal’s pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, accommodations at the Tera Miranda Lodge in Oklahoma, restaurant gift certificates and golf passes.

Tickets are $55 or $500 for a table of 10.

Registration for Gladstone’s sixth annual Daddy Daughter Dance on Feb. 14 is still open, but the Feb. 15 dance is sold out.

The annual dance and dinner, sponsored by Gladstone Parks and Recreation, is for girls ages 3-12 and a dad, grandpa or uncle.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a buffet dinner at the Gladstone Community Center, 6901 N. Holmes, Gladstone.

Tickets are $45 per couple before Jan. 24 or $55 after. Additional daughters are $20 each. The reservation deadline is Feb. 7. The event is limited to 150 couples.

Girls will receive a gift and a photograph with their date.

Grandfamilies to meet

The Northland Grandfamilies Program will meet at 10 a.m. today at the North Cross United Methodist Church, 1321 N.E. Vivion Road, Kansas City, North.

The meeting is open to any grandparent, aunt or uncle who is raising children 18 years old or younger.

This month’s meeting will include support group discussion and planning for 2014 events.

Jewell debate teams

Two William Jewell College debate teams have earned first-round bids to the 2014 National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence at Northern Arizona University.

Out of more than 500 college teams nationwide Jewell teams ranked seventh and 17th, qualifying them for the competition in Arizona.

Spencer Shanks of Kearney and Tyler White of Independence, who are ranked seventh, ended the semester with a second-place finish at the Washburn University tournament in Topeka.

Stephen Ahal of Chesterfield, Mo., and Rosemary Loehr of Kansas City, North, finished the semester as the No. 17 team in the nation.
